PANTHEIST (BEL)
1000 YEARS none
Written by Serge Regoor on Sunday 30 June, 2002. Last updated on Tuesday 30 November, 1999
From the deepest bowels of Belgium comes Pantheïst, a funeral doom band that delivers its first CDemo with 1000 Years. The band is the living proof of the premonition that in doom metal, it's not the beats-per-minute count, but the minutes-per-beat. Ultra slow doom, in very low-tuned guitars, with deathgrunts, talking vocals, singing, organs, etc. I'm a very big doom fan, ranging from Saint Vitus to My Dying Bride, but I totally see nothing interesting in this release. The songs are boring (and mind you, doom can be very exciting although slow!), the sound isn't what it should be, and there's far too much emphasis on the use keyboards, that aren't good at all. Even more annoying are the male chants, and they're everywhere on this CD! Together with the organ I've got the feeling I'm in a catholic church, listening to Gregorian psalms. I'm sorry, I just can't appreciate this CDemo at all.
