PANTHEïST (BEL)
O SOLITUDE Firebox Records
Written by Loekske deleeuw on Wednesday 25 June, 2003. Last updated on Tuesday 30 November, 1999
As if 2003 wasn?t one of the best years for the doom-metal genre already, it certainly is now. What the difference is between a superb doom-year, and a super superb doom-year, you might ask? Easy. Matter of calculating certain things. Because if super equals ?O solitude?, you could state that a superb doom-year plus ?O solitude? is a super superb doom-year. Because besides Skepticism?s 'Farmakon', UDOM?s  'Prelude to monolith' and both the Doomination as the Funeral procession-tours, there?s now also the first full-length of the Belgian Funeral doomsters Pantheïst.
I'm not gonna spend much words on their background etcetera as that seems kinda useless to me; if you?re into doom already you have probably seen Pantheïst during one of their two semi-European tours, or heard/read something about ?em on the net, and if yer not into doom, then this release isn?t gonna get get you into it anyway.
Not that this is a bad release, but it?s probably to extreme to convert those grindpussy?s into really extreme music. It is slow (although not as slow as UDOM) and furthermore the music is kinda dominated by the organ (keybord), which the funeralfreaks will definitely love.  Especially since it?s used quite original, because instead of the way for instance Skepticism uses it as a backgroundinstrumented only, it?s played here pretty fast sometimes; used as if it were a guitar.
The vocals vary from the deep whispering grunts, via a chanting, Gregorian style to some spoken words. And this variation keeps everything interesting. As you may know, this genre is kinda limited and therefore it certainly speaks for Pantheïst that they keep looking for those limits, without crossing them. Because things like the spare early MDB?ish accelerations keep this a original release. Another definite pro is the song ?Envy us?, because of the funeralized classical music, originally composed by Chopin. The production is excellent, especially in comparison with the demo?s.
The only possible improvements I can think of right now are perhaps the clean vox (which seem out of tune every now & then), and perhaps another Dutch lyric would be nice?
But, with such a good record, a stable line-up and quality live-shows, Pantheïst is ready to become one of the leading bands in the NWOEDM, the new wave of extreme doom-metal.
