THE RAYS OF THE SUN (CZE)
LIVING FLOWERS GALLERY Metal Breath Production
Written by Tim Pijnenburg on Sunday 07 November, 2004. Last updated on Tuesday 30 November, 1999
Sometimes you get to hear music that is hard to label in one particular genre. This also counts for this band from the Czech Republic. The Rays Of The Sun recorded 4 demos between 1996 and 2001 before they were signed by Metal Breath which released their debut album Living Flowers Gallery in 2004.  It is said as if this should be doom metal, but in my opinion it is much more than only that! It 's not the individual skills that make this album interesting, because those are from a moderate level, but especially the atmosphere that the members ( four men and one woman) create. All songs have a certain effect on your mood. You have to take some time for this one, but eventually you 'll get into it! Just turn of the lights, settle down in your favourite couch, close your eyes and listen to the songs!

In total there are eight songs. Four tracks are without the female voice so with just the voice from guitarist / singer Michal. His charismatic, low singing puts you in a melancholic, spacey trance and keeps you there during the songs. He articulates the English language with a small Czech accent, what contributes to the dark and mysterious sound. The instruments intensify all the feelings evoked by the frontman. Smooth ambience passages can take you away to imaginary medieval landscapes, but get subtle disturbed by omnious and sometimes depressive low tunes and slight effects. The female vocals, performed by Daniela, are joining in on " Awake", "Follow copy", Past time" and the Czech spoken song "Podzemi" ( preceded by the short accoustic instrumental song "waiting for sun"). This results in beautiful and strange duets between her and Michal.
Absolute highlight on this album for me is the song "No man 's town"! This one could be a soundtrack for some kind of movie! An U2 / Red Hot Chili Peppers guitar lick is used as a red line through this song, with refined tempo accelerations that builts up to an Anathema like climax!! Effective and Sublime!!

A band with a real own style! I cannot specifically make comparisations to other bands, only the sphere created and ingredients used can maybe traced back to bands like The Cure, Pink floyd, Sisters of mercy, Black Sabbath, U2, RHCP and Anathema. And I 'm pretty sure that people will partial disagree and come up with several other names, because this music works on your senses / feelings and that 's different for each person! So you have to check it out yourselve on their website!!
