FORGOTTEN TOMB (ITA)
LOVE'S BURIAL GROUND Adipocere Records
Written by Geert Van Mook on Thursday 23 December, 2004. Last updated on Tuesday 30 November, 1999
A few weeks ago I finally found the vinyl version of Forgotten Tomb's debut album 'Songs to Leave' after a long search. 'Songs to Leave' is one of those very few albums that never bored me, a real classic in my opinion. Since 'Songs to Leave', this Italian Suicide squad, leaded by Herr Morbid, released two albums. 'Love's Burial Ground' is their latest strike and I've heard from several reliable sources that this album will be their final output in this style; depressive suicidal black metal. In the future, Forgotten Tomb will direct its style elsewhere, away from black metal. Enough about that, back to the essence of this review, namely 'Love's Burial Ground'. As the title tells us, this is again a very dark, depressive album in the typical Forgotten Tomb style. With long songs, melancholic, hypnotising guitar riffs, and the dirty lyrical-suicide propaganda of Herr Morbid, who wishes you all to be dead. During 'Love's Burial Ground' it again becomes clear what the main influence of the band is, namely old Katatonia. Deeply inspired by albums like 'Dance of December Souls' and the genius 'Brave Murder Days', yet without copying them, Forgotten Tomb created another masterpiece, which almost reaches the intensity of 'Songs to Leave'. Especially the song 'Alone' is one of pure melancholic frustration which is the ultimate soundtrack for some cruel handlings against yourself. Most parts of the album are mid-paced played, yet as in good Forgotten Tomb tradition we also hear some fast, raging moments at the right places in the music, which makes 'Love's Burial Ground' a little more varying. Notable is the song 'House of Nostalgia'. This track gives me 'nostalgic' feeling to 'Songs to Leave' because of the creepy atmosphere and the unique processing of finger-picking guitars into the music. I don't think ,however, that Herr Morbid has meant a view back to the 'Songs to Leave' album with this song title. It's my own interpretation of the title. 'Love's Burial Ground' provides 65!! minutes of pure suicidal art in the well known Forgotten Tomb style. I'm really wondering what upcoming Forgotten Tomb releases will sound like, but one thing is for sure, it won't be simplistic feel-good-easy-listening music. For now, I think I'm going to listen to 'Love's Burial Ground' again, and again, and again.
