PANTHEïST (BEL)
AMARTIA Firebox Records
Written by Steven Van Cauwenbergh on Friday 13 May, 2005. Last updated on Tuesday 30 November, 1999
Usually I don?t listen to this kind of music that often but now and then it?s the best soundtrack on a rainy day. PANTHEIST isn?t a new name in the doom scene anymore, they?ve already shown what they?re capable of in the past with O Solitude. Although I never really saw them as a live band I always enjoyed their material on CD. It?s one of those bands that work best as a studio unit rather than a live band, seeing a funeral doom band live has always been a bit strange in my opinion. I like listening to funeral doom when I?m at ease in my sofa reading of dreaming away. This is what Kostas understood also and he made PANTHEIST into a studio project and a wise choice it was indeed. The former line-up was shattered over a few European countries that made rehearsing very difficult. So PANTHEIST became an all-British band with no one less than Andy and Mark of ESOTERIC to join the ranks for this record. Amartia is not funeral doom in the strict sense of the word it has a lot of DEAD CAN DANCE type of atmosphere in it with some very nicely done choir pieces, it?s also a bit too dynamic to be called funeral doom, they even have some fast paced moments. Although the songs are rather long off course, the songs don?t seem that long it flows very natural and it didn?t bore me one bit, which is a merit in this style of music. And so the funeral parade walks by towards the end of the CD leaving sadness and despair on its way.
