My name is Ron Salden and I'm one of the first members of Vampire magazine. We started out somewhere in 1997 when I was still studying psychology. Hell, those two paper editions of our magazine were absolutely great! I remember going to the copyshop to copy our first printed interviews, reviews and such. Back then, we did the zine in Dutch, don't remember why exactly but it probably has something to do with some crazy guy from Prinsenbeek. The reason why I joined Vampire magazine is simple. I wanted to support cool bands which aren't getting the support they should get. No matter if they're well-known, popular or as unknown as the first ever line-up of Suppository (yes, that one was truly CULT).
I got acquainted with metal in the late 1980s but I didn't like the musical style back then. It was not until 1991 when I revised my opinion and from then on I started buying some metal stuff. At first the more extreme styles, death/grind/doom (black metal didn't exist back then, it was just the name of one of Venom's songs). In the mid-1990's I started listening to softer styles like heavy/power metal. During the years, I eventually became more and more openminded so when I joined the ranks of Vampire zine I was probably the most openminded one of the whole bunch. In short my motto is that there's only good and bad music. I don't give a fuck about styles. Classical music, pop, jazz, techno, progressive stuff, house, rock, avant garde, metal, whatever you can come up with, if it's good then chances are that I'll like it. I'm not going to mention my favorite bands as they are far too numerous.
Of course music isn't the only art form I find pleasure in. I also indulge in other sorts of visual and auditorial stimuli like movies, literature or art in any format available. Furthermore, the observation of people in every possible situation is highly interesting, amusing and moving.
In my regular life I'm currently working as a Post Doctoral Researcher in cognitive and educational psychology at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, U.S.A. I could write a whole story about it but this is not the place to do it. Rather, check www.cs.cmu.edu/~rons
