This CDemo should have arrived at my place in November last year but since my postman fucked up he delivered it to my upper neighbor. And since she didn't figure out to check who the new guy living downstairs was until New Year's Eve, the aural pleasures of The Kolios Project remained elusive until 2006. For some music genres writing a review is like having a good bottle of wine; you don't want to rush things but rather take your time. And now that I've taken considerable time to fully experience the soundscapes offered on this disc I can truly say it is a most refreshing musical dive.
Like bands such as Gordian Knot or At War With Self main man Ryan Denzer-King and co-founder Manfred Dikkers (drums) paint with aural waves to construct intricate networks of enrapturing musical voyages. The songs are richly textured with various guitar layers, pulsing drums and exquisite bass lines. Various guests such as Alan Goldstein (ex-Aghora), Tymon Kruidenier (Exivious), Andre Verholen, Jan-Mikael Erakare and Santiago Dobles (Aghora), have graced this CDemo with their talents enabling Ryan to put his musical vision into enticing songs. Interestingly, the music can be heard while either listening on a surface level or while taking the deep plunge as an aural scuba diver looking at the wondrous underwater world. Both ways of listening will give you gratifying listening experiences.
I think Ryan also would like to add a singer to this instrumental extravaganza, yet it would have to be one talented singer to actually enrich the music. The guitar lines already tell so much that adding a vocal line might overdo it or disturb the balance. But I'm always ready to be proven wrong!
Considering this is just a CDemo one can only wonder what The Kolios Project are capable of when a label offers them a deal and gives them the opportunity to create something truly mindblowing. So, where are labels like Sensory Records or Inside Out Records now, have they heard this talented ensemble yet?
