AT WAR WITH SELF (USA)
ACTS OF GOD
Written by Ron Salden on Thursday 23 August, 2007. Last updated on Thursday 23 August, 2007

Destroy, Erase, Improve applies pretty well to Glenn Snelwar's musical vision entitled At War With Self. Both collaborators Michael Manring and Mark Zonder who featured on the debut album are gone and a whole new batch of musicians have taken their place. The music has also changed, or evolved would be more accurate. Though Snelwar's guitar style is easily recognized the music takes on new challenges and explores new musical grounds without sounding completely alien with regard to the debut album.
I should also mention Damon Trotta who is an old friend with whom Snelwar collaborated in bands before. Them coming back together and compose music seems to have happened like the most natural thing. Though I cannot say how much of the music's evolution is due to Trotta, I can say the symbiosis of these two musicians has lead to a most enticing musical offering.

The intricate nature of Snelwar's musical compositions is also omnipresent on "Acts of god". Though he loves to weave layer into layer into layer it never becomes too demanding for the listener. The ease with which amazing sound scapes float all over the songs ensures that this album never will become boring. One of the changes is a stronger electronic sounds (synths, programming) usage which not only adds a more modern touch but also a slightly abrasive character. Furthermore the use of vocals (courtesy of Mark Sunshine) in some of the tracks adds another layer to seduce the listener's ears.

In contrast to a lot of contemporary music At War With Self truly is a band to really listen to. To shut out all outer influences and noise, and to be able to fully submerge in this wondrious musical adventure.
I hope Glenn Snelwar will keep making albums for aeons to come!
