THE WANDERING MIDGET (FIN)
I AM THE GATE Eyes Like Snow
Written by Dave Waite on Friday 11 January, 2008. Last updated on Friday 11 January, 2008
More super duper doom here from the curiously/bizarrely-titled Finnish trio The Wandering Midget. Formed in 2005 and yet to make a name for themselves in the metal/doom underground, this album entitled “I Am The Gate” is actually a compilation of songs from their two previous demos (2006's "First Encounter" and this years "I Am The Gate"), playing traditional Sabbath-esque doom with all the gloom and despair of early Saint Vitus and Reverend Bizarre releases.

With a suitably lo-fi, garage-styled production and songs that could wipe the smile off even Julie Andrew’s smug face, The Wandering Midget have pieced together seven superbly constructed tracks of lead-heavy, slow as death doom with a slight progressive edge which lends this material an air of individuality sadly missing from so many others in this genre.  “Urk The Conqueror” and “Black Figure Follows The Burial Company” base themselves around primal riffing, thunderous minimal drumming and great vocal melodies, while the rocking “Wolfslayer” and funereal ambiance of the final 18 minute epic “Wasteland Shrine” show just how involved and well written this material is.

Although sometimes a bit sloppy in the musicianship department “I Am The Gate” is nevertheless a great introduction to a band that even in their embryonic stage deserve your attention.  If you’re into the aforementioned Reverend Bizarre or the humongous riff mastery of High On Fire or Witchcraft then The Wandering Midget are definitely a band that will wet more than your appetite.  With a better production these three Finns could easily rival the top names in the genre.
