AMENRA (BEL)
MASS IIII Hypertension Records
Written by Filip Dupont on Wednesday 21 May, 2008. Last updated on Wednesday 21 May, 2008
Long time ago the Belgian H-8000 scene took a leading place in the European edgecore/hardcore scene. Back then Spineless was one of those bands – And since the early years of the new millennium they partly reincarnated into Amenra. After quite some vinyl albums the band released the magnificent "Mass III" album in 2005. Amenra's sound is almost indescribably. They can quietly work to a certain point the tension is about to explode, something post-rock bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor are very good at. Further Amenra are most definitely known for their extremely heavy low doom laden riffs – Inspired by acts such as Isis, Neurosis and other sludge squadrons. Only the hysterical and painful screams of Colin are still connected with the old metalcore scene. Amenra is black - Really black and totally dark. "Mass IIII" comes in a black jewel case and a small black and dark grey poster as a booklet. Apart from the song titles written on the slipcase no info whatsoever is available. No song texts, no line up, no pictures, no recording info – Nothing! It seems like Amenra found the gate to the ultimate grim ambience. "Mass IIII" makes most extreme black metal bands sound like pussies. This is what hell is about. It lasts for about four minutes before "Silver Needle, Golden Nail" breaks loose. Like no other Amenra creates a perfect atmosphere. Throughout the whole set the apocalypse reigns. Long stretched songs turn grief into music. My favorite song must be "De Dodenakker", because of its great and groovy stoner riff. And this positive remark actually brings me to a negative one. On "Mass IIII" I have the feeling the songs sound alike quite a lot. Amenra have found a great formula which they don't differ from under any circumstances. With this in mind I can say "Mass IIII" is the logical sequel on "Mass III". Perhaps the music is bit more complex and slightly different in the easy going laid back parts. But one thing is for sure: "Mass IIII" will be one of the best albums for 2008! The feeling is supernatural – There's no competition at all! Amenra pain their ways. We'll be very eager to walk with them!
