CEREBRAL TURBULENCY (CZE)
SEGREGACE K 0 Khaaranus Productions
Written by Paul Shaw on Saturday 11 October, 2008. Last updated on Saturday 11 October, 2008
Ron messaged me and asked if I wanted to Review some grind albums for Archaic Magazine, so I figured what the hell. He asked me to review Cerebral Turbulency, and I thought he wanted me to review their album Crash Test. Little did I know they had a new album, "Segregace K 0". So here goes, my first review for Archaic.
If you are not familiar with Cerebral Turbulency, buckle up and prepare for an onslaught of strange grind with some weird effects and the all alluring cowbell! This is one ferocious grind band that hail from the Czech Republic. Originally my review referred to each song as a track number, since the song titles are incomprehensible. But, Ron said to me “Now replace the "track x" references in the review with the song titles.” (Ron: I am the law!)
"Segregace K 0" is a 27 minute, 17 track grind opus. The album opens up with a quick blasting number titled "!dobrý Den!" which clocks in at just 56 seconds. The first 12 seconds contain a very long guttural gurgling vocal line. In amongst the blasting are some groovy riffs, odd ambient sounds, and the cowbell blast. That’s right cowbell blasting! This is by far the most recognizable aspect of Cerebral Turbulency, but they do not over use it, just enough to accent the music. "Co Nli Není Rovno", "Po Toni Je Nli Hovno!" opens up with some a few seconds of ambient sounds and then gets right into the song. The opening reminds me of the almighty Nasum song “The Masked Face”, so this is a good thing. They pull off some quick start and stops in this song and throw in a variety of vocal performances including gurgles, grunts, growls and grotesque vocal effects. "2v1" has a spastic feel to it right from the get go, and has some interesting dis harmonic guitar work at a few points in song. All in all a good opening to the album, so this gives you somewhat idea of how the rest of the album will play out.
Cerebral Turbulency keeps up the variety with odd vocal patterns, rhythmic talking, vocal effects, and some more ambient sounds. They use a fade in on "Body P-Arts" which is very different than what most normal grind bands would have done, but then we are not dealing with a normal grind band! They even throw in a DJ spin in the middle of "ObuŠek Z Levhartic", which got a laugh out of me. The production is clear and everything can be heard evenly in the mix, overall it’s a pretty heavy sounding album.
"Segregace K 0" is an interesting listen that does not bore, there are fresh twists and turns on every song and at some points you need to give your head a shake to comprehend what just happened. This is defiantly not an album for everyone, but for those that enjoy Antigama, Fuck the Facts with some influences from Nasum, and Squash Bowels then this would be an album to give a spin.
