KERNEL (ITA)
SERVANT OF GOD (SELF-FINANCED)
Written by Hassan Umer on Friday 15 May, 2009. Last updated on Friday 15 May, 2009
This has to be one of the more 'fresh' and unique-sounding new thrash bands I've heard. Kernel is the name of the band and Servant of God is their debut album.

The sound here is pretty much standard thrash metal with riffs you've probably heard before but what sets this band apart (other than the harsh vocal delivery) is the surprisingly laid-back feeling it has. I don't really feel like banging my head when I'm listening to this album, and nor do I feel like running around my room, pretending to be in a circle pit. What this makes me do instead, is just relax and have a smoke, close my eyes and just ENJOY the music. Yeah, actually enjoy the music, in the true sense of the word! Another thing here which gives this album an identity of its own (again, other than the harsh vox) is that the songs here aren't the short 2-3 minute bangfests that bands like Gama Bomb pride themselves on. What Kernel have done here, is that they've use a whole bag of standard thrash riffs and arranged them in ways that breathe life into the otherwise unremarkable songs. Throw in drumwork that suits the direction the songs take, be it the groovy intro of songs like “Rebel Yourself” or the ultra fast thrashing goodness of “Back to the Violence”, and you have Kernel's debut album. All of the songs have at least one guitar solo and every solo on this album is just downright awesome. The solo's here do exactly what they're supposed to do – make the songs memorable and exciting.

The production here is the icing on the cake, it's pretty modern but not the razor-sharp modern production of the new Destruction albums and manages to retain a degree of rawness via the crunchy and slightly distorted guitar tone. A good first album, and they can only get better with the next one.
