CHAOSFEAR (BRA)
"THE IDEA IS TO CREATE INTENSE MUSIC THAT WILL MAKE THE LISTENER BANG THEIR HEAD FROM BEGINNING TO THE END."
Written by Miguel Miranda on Monday 31 August, 2009. Last updated on Monday 31 August, 2009
In a perfect world Chaosfear would be touring North America and burning up the festival circuit in Europe. But don’t be mistaken, they do have awesome gigs, though certainly not at the level you’d expect after listening to their bruising sophomore effort “Image of Disorder.” Containing 11 tracks that blur the thrash genre’s boundaries, the songs on “Image of Disorder” combine everybody's favorite jagged riffs, furious decibels, and epic guitar solos for an hour of good, friendly, violent, fun. Here’s the band poring over the details of their latest opus. Hello Chaosfear, how have your local fans embraced the new album “Image of Disorder”? Has anyone wanted you to sign their CDs with blood yet? Eduardo Boccomino (vocals, guitar): Hi! No, nobody asked for a CD signed in blood yet! The responses have been doing great while we are still in the first stages of promotion. We already had some reviews and people who listened to the album liked it very much. The difference between positive feedback and being embraced by our audience can be seen during our concerts where we can feel the awesome reception our music generates.
Do you think the material on “Images of Disorder” surpasses your first album, “One Step Away From Anger”? Fernando Boccomino (guitar): Surely “Image of Disorder” is one step ahead (pun intended) of our first album. The addition of my brother Edu Boccomino in the band has brought a more technical and melodic side to the band, which leads us to another level with the compositions. So this mixture of aggressiveness, technical playing, and melody have enriched our songs.
How long have the Boccomino brothers been playing music together? What was the metal scene like in your corner of Brazil when the two of you (or the two of them) were still soaking up your influences? Fernando: My brother and I have been playing together since I was 6 and he was 9. Here in São Paulo the metal scene was always very strong, but there was a lot of prejudice among the citizenry toward anyone with long hair who listens to metal music. The scene is still strong and alive due to the loyalty and love of the people who listen to heavy metal. In that time we did not have any international concerts, new releases, band t-shirts—everything was very hard to come by! The positive side of this was that the concerts from local bands were always crowded and the fans were bleeding for metal! I can say that since we started listening to metal until today, our biggest influences are Kiss, Metallica, Testament and Anthrax—a lot of what we have accomplished we owe to these bands.
When did you guys sit down to write songs for “Images of Disorder”? I noticed that on songs like “Don’t Mask Your Weakness” and “Inner Revolution” the lyrics actually carry a positive message such as self-empowerment. What keeps Chaosfear from writing about the usual topics of war, Satan, and moshpits? Fernando: We started to write “Image of Disorder” in the beginning of 2007 when we were still a trio. By that period we had six songs and the other ones in CD we did together with Edu. Regarding the message you hear in the lyrics, I can say that this is our idea. Danilo and I like to write about important issues that make people stop and think about it. I wrote the lyrics you mentioned and my idea was to tackle reality while always showing a positive and hopeful side.
“Kaleidoscopic Downhill” is an excellent intro to “Image of Disorder,” in my opinion. It’s the kind of overture for an album that so many bands try but usually fail at. Even for a short instrumental, was it a headache composing the music on it? Eduardo: The creation of the intro was very easy, since the beginning of the recording sessions of “Image of Disorder” I wanted to add an instrumental song. Originally “Kaleidoscopic Downhill” would be a song with a lot of solos and much longer, however when I showed it to the guys they thought that the song would fit better as an intro, due to its similarity to Forbidden. I think it’s OK.
Which influence came first for the band: thrash metal or death metal? I’m hearing a lot of the latter on the song “Bitter Dominance.” Those blastbeats and raw guitars are unmistakable! Were the four of you ever tempted to put a pure death metal song in the album? Fernando: Thrash metal, no doubt. Indeed, “Bitter Dominance” sounds like a death metal song with blast beats and very fast tempos, it ‘s a very good music and during our gigs the crowd goes insane when we play it! This is one of our biggest characteristics, the mixture of thrash and death metal. My brother and I are the ones who bring these death metal oriented riffs, although the whole band enjoys the style. In this specific song the riffs are MINE. The title track has this surprise around the middle, the part where the melody turns epic and a few verses are sung with clean vocals. Did this part occur to you guys while still writing the music to “Image of Disorder” or was it added while the song was revised again and again? Fernando: I actually tried those clean vocals during the recording sessions. My brother told me that this part of the song was perfect for a clean voice and that I should try something like that. The result was awesome! In all interviews and reviews we got very positive feedback about it. For sure in our next effort there will be some news concerning the vocals.
Are all of you still big fans of Megadeth? I’m hearing the “Countdown To Extinction” album on the song “Don't Mask Your Weakness”? Have you guys caught Dave Mustaine and co. live over there in Brazil? Fernando: We are all fans of Megadeth. Although Danilo (de Freitas, drums) and I are the ones who like them more, Eduardo is the one who wrote the music you mentioned. I don’t actually hear the Megadeth influence on this song that much, but it is very interesting being compared to a heavy metal giant like Megadeth.
Was that the Hollywood actor Jeff Bridges on the audioclip at the end of “Vergiften”? What movie was it taken from? And what’s a Vergiften? Danilo de Freitas (drums): No, actually I do not remember the guy’s name right now, but he is a businessman and the audio clip was taken from the documentary “The Corporation.” It was a part of the movie that inspired me to write the lyrics, so I asked the producers to add this audio on the CD. “Vergiften” is the German word for being intoxicated.
My favorite song on the album is “Paradox of Pain.” I just love the energy on those breakdowns. It jus makes your body want to move. Are you guys big fans of bands like Devildriver or Killswitch Engage? Fernando: Thank you very much! We also like this song very much, and this was one of the first ones we wrote for the CD. This song works very well on the shows too. We surely like Devildriver and Killswitch Engage but I wouldn’t say that they have influenced us.
“Obliteration (Unlimited)” is that rare kind of song because it finishes your album on a loud note. I listen to so many bands these days and usually the last song sucks. How did you make sure this one didn’t let the music’s energy slip for the last five minutes? Eduardo: It is simple. When we are creating the songs, we do the best we can and always want to reach the limits of our creativity. The idea is to create intense music that will make the listener bang their head from beginning to the end, that is, until the last drop of blood.
“Image of Disorder” came out via OSM records. How did Chaosfear become a part of this label’s roster? Did the OSM dudes find the band a studio to work in or was this done independently? Danilo: This agreement with OSM Records happened some time after the release of our first album and it was due to the work of our former manager, Ronaldo Carone Jr. He did a great job at promoting us and sent one of our CDs to OSM and they liked it. We handled the whole recording process and this included the financing. OSM helps with the promotion too, but having a foreign distribution setup like they do now is very import for us.
Who was responsible for the album’s cover art and its graphic design? What were some of the alternatives you ahd to choose from before you settled on the cover for “Image of Disorder”? Anderson de França (bass): The cover art was developed by the Brazilian designer Gustavo B. Sazes but the other designs works such as the website were developed by me. I used the cover art as a base for the other kinds of medias. There were only two suggestions for artwork; the first one developed by me and a friend and the second one, done by Gustavo. I tried to put all the elements of the lyrics and tried to listen to all the ideas from my band mates, but in this it was impossible to do the right thing. The idea from Gustavo was very good and we all liked and approved it. How would you describe the band’s work ethic inside the studio? Were you all having a good time or were there a few rough patches where you’d get pissed at each other? Eduardo: The recording of the album was just fine and happened without any big problems. We’ve known each other for a long time and we know how to respect the space and time of each person in the band. When we are in the studio we do the best to get the best results possible, so I would say that Chaosfear’s work at the studio is intense.
What gear does the band use? Have you ever lost any equipment during a show that left you feeling really pissed? Eduardo: We use some well know brands such as Ibanez, LTD, Schecter, Line6, Boss, Tama... Until now, by what I remember, I have never lost any expensive equipment but if this ever happens I will get really pissed.
Can you describe the places in your hometown where Chaosfear usually plays gigs? How about out of town or abroad? Where was the farthest place you’ve done shows in? Eduardo: Brazil is not a good country for metal bands, especially the smaller ones. Here the audience and the media only pay attention to the big names like Metallica, Slayer, and Ozzy. But as we love what we do we play more often in our hometown São Paulo. However, the best concerts happen in the inland cities. We have already played in the very south of the country, in a city called Porto Alegre. It was very far.
Do you still remember the very first time Chaosfear hit the stage? When was this? Danilo: That is a very difficult question! You know, considering our ages now and how much alcohol we’ve ingested since then…it was more than 10 years ago, I think, and the band name was still Sick Mind. We played in some very small and odd places here in our hometown at that time, and I can’t say which one was the first. But for sure it was a lousy venue with crappy sounds but we still had fun doing it!
Got day jobs? When does Chaosfear find the time to practice and jam songs? Eduardo: Yes, we all have daily jobs and we all work hard during the week. It is not easy, but that is how life is. We meet every weekend to rehearse, talk about the band's issues, write songs, and watch soccer games. Which member of the band has the biggest CD collection? Eduardo: I think it’s my Danilo. He really has a lot of CDs at home. Anderson and I prefer to borrow instead of buy it. Hahahaha!
Alright, Chaosfear it was a pleasure interviewing you. Hope you enjoyed it. How about porn collections? Who has got the biggest porn collection in the band? Care to lend me some DVDs? Eduardo: Thank you very much for this opportunity! We enjoyed this interview a lot and wish to thank everybody who has supported us all these years! Regarding the porn DVDs, I talked to the guys about it and as they are all married, they wanted to avoid the question. Hahahaha! I have some, but they’re in VHS format. It’s stuff from the 80’s, very cool. As soon as I convert them to CD I can send you some copies! Keep in touch! Thanks once again!
