EMPYREAN (AUS)
QUIETUS
Written by Ronald on Tuesday 29 September, 2009. Last updated on Tuesday 29 September, 2009

Certainly one of the most ambitious works ever made in Australia, a record that shows a very creative band with a huge qty of ideas and riffs, whom am I talking about?...The response is Empyrean and their debut full length album called “Quietus” released on 2008 right after their debut Ep “Embodiment of Sin” in 2006.

This killer album opens with a symphonic intro almost 4 minutes long, and after that, these dudes, or “blokes”, start delivering their music, which is basically a mixture of strong influences of Black Metal with melodic Death and some doomy passages that at the end produce a lot of variety in their sound.

In terms of sound production, the whole thing is crystal and clear while raw and crude, especially the voices that seem to have a reminiscence of Emperor’s debut album “In the Nightside…. In this part, I still have serious problems with the clean voices, I don’t know why if the dude is not a formal singer, starts using clean voices, the end result is a little bit disappointing, but besides of this aspect, his performance is very good, low growls mixed with high screams…really cool.

Empyrean likes to use keyboards a lot, and that’s pretty cool also the only issue that someone might have, not me, is that they sound too much ala Dimmu Borgir, so someone could think that this is a clone band, when it’s not!. This band has its own style, more into a slow proposal; let’s say that this is pretty much more related with UKs Balsagoth’s debut album than the aforementioned band from Norway.

In general terms, 10 trax of pure epic death black metal with good production, a lot of tempo changes, guitar arrangements, dual voices attack…I mean, what else do you need?...this is a great album and if you get the chance to get it, do not hesitate a second…go for it and stay “Quietus” with their assault.
