GORGOROTH (NOR)
QUANTOS POSSUNT AD SATANITATEM TRAHUNT Regain Records
Written by Dallas Bolen on Saturday 30 January, 2010. Last updated on Thursday 04 February, 2010
...fuck. I've listened to this album about 50 times already, and it doesn't faulter in the least. The riffs are seething with ferocity, the drums are fucking awesome(but the bass drums are a tad... triggered for my tastes), the bass is there, but nothing 'out there', and the vocals...fuck, Pest is and always was THE voice of Gorgoroth. That becomes quite clear. Savagely hateful and raw, but when clean, atmospheric as all hell. "Aneuthenasia" starts the album out very strong with it's reminicence of the old sounds of Gorgoroth. The rest of the album is nothing short of amazing. In 9 powerful songs, this 'Rebirth of Gorgoroth' destroys the 10 laughable years of work Gaahl and King put into the band(I do like their side bands alot more than what they did in Gorgoroth, so maybe they work better as musicians under their own will and names?). When the moments are intense, Infernus explodes your audio sensors with insane fretboard work. But when the songs are slow, he and his cohorts create an atmospheric ambience that exceeds where Kings attempt's at such a sound failed. I seriously can't say enough good things about Tomas Asklund's drum work. To go from 'Reinkaos' to 'QPAST', this guy is a drum force that is highly under-rated and insanely amazing (I just wish he'd lay off the triggers). This guy has got drum character all over the place, as his style is unlike any other. Its clear, precise and pummeling. He, in my opinion, has done a better job as Gorgoroth's drummer than Frost ever has. Hell, I thought Kvitrafn was better than Frost now that I think about it. Back to the cd, Pest's vocals are astoundingly just as good as ever, although somewhat missing the youthful SUPER intesity he had on the greatest Norwegian album in history, "Under the Sign of Hell". No longer do we have to suffer with Gaahl's 'old-woman' wailing. Pest's vocals are trembling with rage. The best example has to be on "Satan-Prometheus" (the best track, IMO). His range as a clean/operatic vocalist is just awe-insipiring. In this album, there are the much fan-appreciated guitar riffing that is of the old albums, but Infernus truly displays his chops as a classical guitarist as well. There are so many riffs that are very unique and unheard of in black metal. I think that when he decided to try and steal the name of Gorgoroth, King inadvertently awoke the sleeping Wolf within Infernus. Overall, this album is definately the album of 2009. A nice closer to the first decade of this millenia. I suggest all check this shit out. Unless your one of the fools who actually thought 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Borium' was good, you will no doubt not enjoy the return of the one, true Gorgoroth.
